Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple - Worship

Worship

Kwan Im Temple remains as one of the major temples in the area, with thousands of devotees visiting the temple to pray for blessings from the Goddess. It is known for people to receive good luck after worshiping at the temple, thus making it a popular temple to visit. Most devotees visit the temple on the first or fifteenth day of Chinese New Year. On the eve of Chinese New Year, the temple is opened all night and the street is packed with devotees praying to the Goddess for an auspicious start to the New Year. The temple is well known for its divination activity. Qian or divining sticks which are wooden sticks with writing on it, are placed in a brass can and shaken. These cans have been resounding in the temple since 1884. When such sticks fallout, they are interpreted to tell one's future. In 1990, the temple was the first in Singapore to provide divination slips in English for English-educated devotees and visitors. It was granted a historic site in 2001. An alternative name for the temple is "Guan Yin Tong Temple".

Famous quotes containing the word worship:

The art of government is the organization of idolatry. The bureaucracy consists of functionaries; the aristocracy, of idols; the democracy, of idolaters. The populace cannot understand the bureaucracy: it can only worship the national idols.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

You who were directionless, and thought it would solve everything if you found one,
What do you make of this? Just because a thing is immortal
Is that any reason to worship it? Death, after all, is immortal.
But you have gone into your houses and shut the doors, meaning
There can be no further discussion.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

I hear as good exclamation on your worship as of any man in the city.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
