This town is now famous for the annual Vavu Bali ancestor worship ceremony that is held here during Karkidaka vavu in July. The pooja festival here was also made popular with an exhibition founded by Shri. T.C Kesava Pillai, MLC, MLA, and the first municipal chairman in the early 1900s, with lots of festivities and entertainment. Thousands of people from Kerala and Tamil Nadu visit this area for pithru bali tharpanam and exhibition every year. Vavu means - black (new) moon and Bhali means - Dedication/prayers to the souls of the dead/departed ones. This annual Bali to respect the ancestors is observed with flowers and rice on the bank of the river Thamaraparani of Kuzhithurai.

The river Thamaraparani of Kuzhithurai is very clear and every season even in harsh summer,the river remains just the same. Kuzhithurai never thus lack in water. As it is a gift to the people of the surrounding, agriculture is quite common here. We can find at least few trees in every house and people are very much interested in agriculture. The land is fertile with plenty of water. Kuzhithurai is blessed with the presence of Thamaraparani river. On the bank of the river Thamaraparani, there is a traditional Kerala architecture style palace of Travancore Maharaja.The palace was believed to be constructed around 17th century and the palace lost its former glory. However, the palace complex continue to be the best examples of traditional Kerala architecture. It is believed that this palace serve as a halt for King and his Army on the way from Thiruvananthapuram to Padhmanaphapuram Palace.
