Kugel Ball

A kugel ball is a sculpture consisting of a large granite ball supported by a very thin film of water. Water flows beneath a very heavy, perfectly spherical rock from a spherical concave base with exactly the same curvature. A kugel ball can weigh thousands of pounds, but because the thin film of water lubricates it, the ball spins.

Kugel ball installations can be found all over the world. Many are at popular tourist destinations, such as a science museum in the United States, a shopping center in England, a hotel lobby in Kuwait, and a botanical garden in Germany.

The term kugel ball originates from the German word Kugel for ball, sphere or globe.

Famous quotes containing the word ball:

I don’t like comparisons with football. Baseball is an entirely different game. You can watch a tight, well-played football game, but it isn’t exciting if half the stadium is empty. The violence on the field must bounce off a lot of people. But you can go to a ball park on a quiet Tuesday afternoon with only a few thousand people in the place and thoroughly enjoy a one-sided game. Baseball has an aesthetic, intellectual appeal found in no other team sport.
