Notable Stores and Events

  • James Earl Ray was sentenced to 20 years at the Missouri State Penitentiary after robbing a Kroger in St. Louis of $120 in 1959. After Ray escaped from the prison he assassinated Martin Luther King.
  • The Kroger supermarket on Ponce de Leon Avenue in the Ford Factory complex in Atlanta is the basis for a pop culture theme and Internet meme (viral concept made popular via the Internet). The store itself is considered a local landmark known by the nickname "Murder Kroger", after a murder that took place in the parking lot in 2002.
  • In Knoxville, Tennessee a Kroger Store on 2217 N Broadway St is affectionately called the "Fellini Kroger" (an allusion to the Italian filmmaker). Residents have long called that store the "Fellini Kroger" but it is unclear as to who originally coined the phrase.
  • In the 1970s and '80s a 24-hour Atlanta Kroger next door to The Limelight nightclub became known as the "Disco Kroger", as club patrons would shop there after attendance, their party attire being at considerable variance from the typical midnight grocery shoppers'.

Famous quotes containing the words notable, stores and/or events:

In one notable instance, where the United States Army and a hundred years of persuasion failed, a highway has succeeded. The Seminole Indians surrendered to the Tamiami Trail. From the Everglades the remnants of this race emerged, soon after the trail was built, to set up their palm-thatched villages along the road and to hoist tribal flags as a lure to passing motorists.
—For the State of Florida, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

Piles of gold are not as good as stores of grain.
    Chinese proverb.

This is certainly not the place for a discourse about what festivals are for. Discussions on this theme were plentiful during that phase of preparation and on the whole were fruitless. My experience is that discussion is fruitless. What sets forth and demonstrates is the sight of events in action, is living through these events and understanding them.
    Doris Lessing (b. 1919)
