Education and Research
Educational facilities are in a much developed stage. C.M.S College, the first college in Kerala, was started in Kottayam in 1817 by the Church Missionary Society. The Pazhaya Seminary of the Malankara Orthodox Church was the first institution to start English education in Southern India by C.M.S. Missionaris(After Independence of India CSI). C.M.S High School, (now Church Missionary Society College High School), was founded by the British missionary, Benjamin Bailey of the Church Mission Society of London. The Baker Memorial Girls High School in Kottayam, founded by Amalia Dorothea Baker in 1820, is one of the oldest girls' schools in India.All the CMS instituitions are under CSI after independence of India, who are the successors of CMS.
According to a journal published in 2010, Kottayam has 478 Lower Primary schools, 208 Upper Primary schools and 258 High Schools in the district. Also there are 24 Arts and Science colleges, 4 Training colleges, 3 co-operative colleges, 7 Teachers Training institutes, 2 industrial training institutes, and many Engineering colleges in the district. Only university affiliated Media College in south India (SJCC) situated in Kottayam District. Mahatma Gandhi University, one of six universities in Kerala, is located at Kottayam. Medical College, Kottayam is located about 8 km from the town. Arts & Science Colleges include C.M.S. College Kottayam, K.G.College pampady, BCM College, St. Thomas College Pala, SB College Changanasserry, Alphonsa College Pala, Assumption College, Changanassery etc. The government engineering colleges in the district include Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam and Kidangoor engineering college. Self-financed engineering colleges are also there in Kottayam, such as St.Joseph's College of Engineering & Technology, Palai, Amal Jyothi College of Engineering(Kanjirappally), Saintgits college of engineering and technology and Mangalam college of engineering and technology. Polytechnic colleges include Model Polytechnic College, Mattakkara, Govt. Polytechnic, Pala and Govt.Polytechnic, Nattakom. Several Nursing schools/Colleges are located in and around the town.The biggest entrance coaching centre, Brilliant is also situated in Kottayam(Mutholy, Pala)
Jyothis Academy is an AMIE coaching center located in Kottayam.
