Activities and Facilities

The Koffler teaches dance, music, literature, drama, and visual arts to all ages; presents exhibitions of cutting-edge contemporary Canadian art; and is home to the Helen and Stan Vine Canadian Jewish Book Awards, the annual Toronto Jewish Book Festival, and the Koffler Chamber Orchestra. It presents concerts, film screenings, poetry, spoken word, comedy, and discussions on world issues through the lens of culture. Rooted in the Jewish community of Toronto, one of the most vibrant in the world, The Koffler specializes in an interdisciplinary mix of programs to bring artists and the community together. In 2009, the Koffler Centre of the Arts was incorporated for charitable status in Canada.

The Koffler Centre of the Arts, along with the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto to which it is an agency, is embarking on a dynamic vision to create a modern 40,000 ft² (3,700 m²) facility to address the needs of future generations and the ever-changing aspects of the arts. Part of the Tomorrow Campaign, one of the most ambitious not-for-profit building projects in Canada, this new building will be situated in its present location on the newly renamed Sherman Campus set into an extensive ravine along the Don River. Sherman Campus will also include a rebuilt 450-seat Leah Posluns Theatre, the permanent galleries and research facilities of The Jewish Museum of Canada, the Prosserman JCC, and a renovated and enhanced Lipa Green Centre for Jewish Community Services. The new facilities of the Koffler will include multiple exhibition spaces: a 4,000 sq. ft. main gallery space; showcase display areas; an exterior sculpture court; and a permanent public art program, both interior and exterior. The building will feature state-of-the-art studios for visual arts, dance, music, writing, and new media; multi-purpose rooms for programs; and AAA standard loading dock and exhibition preparatory areas essential to presenting touring exhibitions.

Famous quotes containing the words activities and, activities and/or facilities:

Justice begins with the recognition of the necessity of sharing. The oldest law is that which regulates it, and this is still the most important law today and, as such, has remained the basic concern of all movements which have at heart the community of human activities and of human existence in general.
    Elias Canetti (b. 1905)

Love and work are viewed and experienced as totally separate activities motivated by separate needs. Yet, when we think about it, our common sense tells us that our most inspired, creative acts are deeply tied to our need to love and that, when we lack love, we find it difficult to work creatively; that work without love is dead, mechanical, sheer competence without vitality, that love without work grows boring, monotonous, lacks depth and passion.
Marta Zahaykevich, Ucranian born-U.S. psychitrist. “Critical Perspectives on Adult Women’s Development,” (1980)

Marriage is good enough for the lower classes: they have facilities for desertion that are denied to us.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)
