Knowlton Hat Factory

Knowlton Hat Factory is a historic factory at 134 Main Street in Upton, Massachusetts.

The factory was built in 1872 and operated by the Knowlton family. It became the biggest women's hat factory in the world in the 1830s. Business continued under the family heirs, as well as others, until it closed in the mid-1970s.

The site added to the National Historic Register in 1982. It has been transformed from a factory into housing.

Famous quotes containing the words hat and/or factory:

The purity of today will invest us like a breeze,
Only be hard, spare, ironical: something one can
Tip one’s hat to and still get some use out of.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

I reverently believe that the Maker who made us all makes everything in New England but the weather. I don’t know who makes that, but I think it must be raw apprentices in the weather-clerk’s factory who experiment and learn how.... In the spring I have counted one hundred and thirty-six different kinds of weather inside of four-and-twenty hours.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)
