Knowledge Mobilization - Open Access & Open Data

Open Access & Open Data

Movements such as Open Access and Open Data can play a positive role in Knowledge Mobilization. Access to scholarly research and data sets has increased partly as a result of these movements, as well as greater digitization and dissemination of resources by government and NGOs. However, many institutions do not yet make their research publicly available and lack an open access repository or directory.

While such open tools are viewed as welcome and important contributions to the work undertaken by knowledge mobilization specialists, it is crucial to note that further work is necessary in order to foster collaboration with knowledge brokers and consumers who may benefit from the open access and open data movements.

Famous quotes containing the words open, access and/or data:

“What we know, is a point to what we do not know.” Open any recent journal of science, and weigh the problems suggested concerning Light, Heat, Electricity, Magnetism, Physiology, Geology, and judge whether the interest of natural science is likely to be soon exhausted.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Whilst the rights of all as persons are equal, in virtue of their access to reason, their rights in property are very unequal. One man owns his clothes, and another owns a country.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Mental health data from the 1950’s on middle-aged women showed them to be a particularly distressed group, vulnerable to depression and feelings of uselessness. This isn’t surprising. If society tells you that your main role is to be attractive to men and you are getting crow’s feet, and to be a mother to children and yours are leaving home, no wonder you are distressed.
    Grace Baruch (20th century)
