Kingsley Amis - Family

Family

Amis's first marriage, of fifteen years, was to Hilary Bardwell, daughter of a civil servant, by whom he had two sons and one daughter; they are:

  1. Philip Amis, a graphics designer, who is divorced and remarried.
  2. Martin Amis, a novelist, twice married: first in 1984 (divorced) to Antonia Phillips, a widowed Bostonian philosophy teacher, with two sons Louis and Jacob; and then to Isabel Fonseca with two daughters. He has an additional daughter named Delilah outside of his two marriages.
  3. Sally Amis, who died in 2000.

Kingsley Amis was married a second time, to the novelist Elizabeth Jane Howard from 1965 to 1983, with whom he had no children.

At the end of his second marriage, he went to live with his ex-wife Hilary and her third husband, in a deal brokered by their two sons Philip and Martin, so that he could be cared for until his death.

Famous quotes containing the word family:

My Friend is not of some other race or family of men, but flesh of my flesh, bone of my bone. He is my real brother.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

With all the attention paid to your new baby, it’s easy for your own feelings and needs to get lost in the shuffle. Although all parents engage in some self-sacrifice for their children, keep in mind that your goal isn’t just to raise a happy, healthy child. You want that child to be part of a happy, healthy family as well.
    Lawrence Kutner (20th century)

True spoiling is nothing to do with what a child owns or with amount of attention he gets. he can have the major part of your income, living space and attention and not be spoiled, or he can have very little and be spoiled. It is not what he gets that is at issue. It is how and why he gets it. Spoiling is to do with the family balance of power.
    Penelope Leach (20th century)
