History
King's Mill was opened as a military hospital in 1942, as the 30th General Hospital of California - the first American wartime hospital in Britain. The hospital housed 400 injured American personnel as well as German prisoners of war. After the war the site was opened as King's Mill Hospital.
On 14 January 1975, the Dukeries Centre was opened by the Duchess of Devonshire. This is separate from the rest of the hospital and currently contains Maternity Services. This is due to close in January 2011 when the occupants will move to the third tower of the main hospital.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“They are a sort of post-house,where the Fates
Change horses, making history change its tune,
Then spur away oer empires and oer states,
Leaving at last not much besides chronology,
Excepting the post-obits of theology.”
—George Gordon Noel Byron (17881824)
“To care for the quarrels of the past, to identify oneself passionately with a cause that became, politically speaking, a losing cause with the birth of the modern world, is to experience a kind of straining against reality, a rebellious nonconformity that, again, is rare in America, where children are instructed in the virtues of the system they live under, as though history had achieved a happy ending in American civics.”
—Mary McCarthy (19121989)
