“Brittle beauty that nature made so frail,
Whereof the gift is small, and short the season,
Flowring today, tomorrow apt to fail,
Tickle treasure, abhorred of reason,
Dangerous to deal with, vain, of none avail,
Costly in keeping, passed not worth two peason,”
—Henry Howard, Earl Of Surrey (1517?1547)
“This is my letter to the world,
That never wrote to me
The simple news that Nature told,”
—Emily Dickinson (18301886)
“For true poetry, complete poetry, consists in the harmony of contraries. Hence, it is time to say aloudand it is here above all that exceptions prove the rulethat everything that exists in nature exists in art.”
