Kingdom Games

The Kingdom Games (Dutch: Koninkrijksspelen, Papiamento: Weganan di Reino) are a multi-sport event which is held every two years between the youth of the countries that are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. At the last games, these countries were the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. How the 2010 dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles will affect the participating teams in the games is currently unknown. Together with creating a sportive atmosphere, respect and fraternization are also the central themes of the Games. The contact between the countries and their cultures is however the main theme. The 2011 games were scheduled to be held in Curaçao, but were cancelled due to the political situation surrounding the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles. There is hope that the games will be held again in 2013.

In 1600 the specialization of games and pastimes did not extend beyond infancy; after the age of three or four it decreased and disappeared. From then on the child played the same games as the adult, either with other children or with adults. . . . Conversely, adults used to play games which today only children play.
