History
Students would try to complete the run in the quickest time.
It was banned in 1964 by Cambridge University proctors, but was restarted by the Cantabrigensis Hash House Harriers in 1982, and is run bi-annually.
The current record is 14 min 05 sec held by John Philips of the Cambridge Hash House Harriers.
A tie is awarded to competitors who complete the course in under one hour.
In 1967, I was a student pilot at nearby RAF Oakington and had agreed to go on the run but, when I was rostered for an early training flight the following morning, I wimped out of what could have been a career-ending affair. I was told that the run SHOULD be completed without going for a pee or a puke. For each that one had, the previous pint had to be drunk again. Each was to be recorded on the tie with a green 'P' for a pee and a yellow 'P' for a puke. Clearly, those who had a collection of 'P's were real tenacious heros. I'd appreciate confirmation of my understanding by a tieholder.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Three million of such stones would be needed before the work was done. Three million stones of an average weight of 5,000 pounds, every stone cut precisely to fit into its destined place in the great pyramid. From the quarries they pulled the stones across the desert to the banks of the Nile. Never in the history of the world had so great a task been performed. Their faith gave them strength, and their joy gave them song.”
—William Faulkner (18971962)
“Anything in history or nature that can be described as changing steadily can be seen as heading toward catastrophe.”
—Susan Sontag (b. 1933)
“History ... is, indeed, little more than the register of the crimes, follies, and misfortunes of mankind.
But what experience and history teach is thisthat peoples and governments have never learned anything from history, or acted on principles deduced from it.”
—Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (17701831)
