Kharghar - Transportation

Transportation

Kharghar is located on the outskirts of Mumbai. It lies in what is commonly regarded as the Konkan part of Maharashtra and fall in Raigad District. Kharghar railway station lies on the Harbour Line, a part of Mumbai suburban railway system. It takes about 65 minutes to reach Kharghar by suburban train from Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus. A drive by road from CST (39 km) takes about 90 minutes. The six lane Mumbai-Pune Expressway starts at Kalamboli (near Kharghar). A new broad gauge line has connected Kharghar to Karjat via Panvel.

The place is easily approachable from Pune, the other major city of the state. Within the suburb, Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport facilities are available and buses ply frequently between stations, nodes and within sectors.

Private cars and two wheelers continue to serve as the prime means of transport. Private Taxi owners like Meru Networks offer taxi services from Kharghar to other parts of Navi Mumbai and Mumbai. Local public transportation within the node is difficult as the autorickshaws controlled by the native villagers of the area charge exorbitant fares and do not follow the Road Traffic Office Mandatory Metering System. NMMT Bus services though improved over the years do not have sufficient frequency to cater to the growing population. The NMMT Buses also ply directly to Kharghar Railway Station. Now the NMMT has extended the ac bus service 123 from CBD depot To Kharghar(Jalvayu Vihar).B.E.S.T has introduced few routes plying to parts of Mumbai [504Ltd towards Deonar / Sion / Wadala Depot. Because of wide roads, sparse population and virtually non existent traffic police, several vehicles ply on the wrong side of the road and blatantly break traffic rules. However the Auto Service is Worst in this part of the satellite city. Most of the Auto Walas are villagers and they do not allow any outsider to ply auto. They are stubborn & least interested in convenince of the residents There are no auto sharing and the minium rate is Rs. 15/- which is very high. Auto Charges : Karghar Station to Sector 12 (Shilp Chowk)/Raghunath Vihar /Jalvaayu Vihar Is Rs 30 . Sector 19 & 20 -Rs 40 (Approx. Distance 2.5 km). They are often rude if ask for the normal rate cards. In some places, there's not a single standing at an Auto Stand. The skywalk is around 1.7 km in length. It will help reduce the number of accidents caused when pedestrians cross the highway. “Several accidents have taken place on the highway. They are appealing to people to use the subway to reach Kharghar station. If the skywalk is opened most of them will use it and it will deter highway crossing,” said a constable attached to Kharghar traffic police outpost.
