After leaving office as Lieutenant Governor, Sullivan taught media and public policy at Quinnipiac University and then became the President and CEO of Children's Museum of Connecticut. He is also the author of a training program called, "Why Bad Government Happens to Good People."

Sullivan was chosen as Commissioner of the Department of Revenue Services by Governor Dannell Malloy and assumed this position as of January 5, 2011.

Sullivan is married to educator and West Hartford Town Councilwoman Dr. Carolyn Thornberry.
