Electric Kettles

See also: Electric water boiler See also: Instant hot water dispenser

Electric kettles are normally constructed of durable plastic or steel (with a plastic handle) and powered by mains electricity. In modern designs, once the water has reached boiling, the kettle automatically deactivates to prevent the water boiling away and damaging the heating element. They were introduced as means to boil water without the necessity of a stove top.

In New Zealand and Australia, a kettle is colloquially referred to as a jug.

Famous quotes containing the words electric and/or kettles:

    That’s the down-town frieze,
    Principally the church steeple,
    A black line beside a white line;
    And the stack of the electric plant,
    A black line drawn on flat air.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

    My grandmother stood among her kettles and ladles.
    Smiling, in faulty grammar,
    She praised my fortune and urged my lofty career.
    So to please her I studied—but I will remember always
    How she poured confusion out, how she cooled and labeled
    All the wild sauces of the brimming year.
    Mary Oliver (b. 1935)
