Gul Agha Sherzai was Governor of the province before and after the Taliban government, until early 2003, when mounting criticism of his efforts led President Hamid Karzai to remove him from the post. He was replaced by Yousef Pashtun, who was an Engineer by profession and a strong Afghan Intellectual. In 2005, when President Karzai won the first Afghan Presidential Elections, he appointed Yousef Pashtun as the Minister of Urban Development and Gul Agha Sherzai was reinstated as Governor of kandahar until 2006. In 2006, Asadullah Khalid, who governed the province until the appointment of Rahmatullah Raufi in August 2008. Raufi was replaced by Toryalai Wesa in December 2008.
