Ukrainian-born painter Marie Bashkirtseff, known in Paris of that time as "the Slavic virgin" took her cue from the young artist's admiration for the true forms of reality and inspiration found in nature.

By curious coincidence she succumbed to chronic illness prematurely in the same year, 1884.
