The rock inscription at Joss House Bay is a declared monument of Hong Kong. This inscription is dated to the Jiashu year of Xianchun's reign in the Southern Song Dynasty (i.e. 1274 AD). It is the oldest dated inscription in Hong Kong, and records a visit by an officer in charge of the salt administration. It also gives the history of two temples, north and south of Joss House Bay.

Famous quotes containing the words rock and/or inscription:

    The acorn’s not yet
    Fallen from the tree
    That’s to grow the wood,
    That’s to make the cradle,
    That’s to rock the bairn,
    That’s to grow a man,
    That’s to lay me.
—Unknown. The Cauld Lad of Hilton or, The Wandering Spectre (l. 2–8)

Gratefully accepting the proffered honor, [to inscribe a new legal work to him] I give the leave, begging only that the inscription may be in modest terms, not representing me as a man of great learning, or a very extraordinary one in any respect.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)
