Family and Children
In 1859 when he was 32 Joshua James married his 16-year-old fourth cousin Louisa Lucihe of Hingham, Massachusetts. Six of their ten children reached adulthood. Three girls and one boy died in infancy. Their surviving son, Osceola James born in 1865, became a sailor and master of the steamer Myles Standish. Famous quotes containing the words family and/or children:
“The Family is the Country of the heart. There is an angel in the Family who, by the mysterious influence of grace, of sweetness, and of love, renders the fulfilment of duties less wearisome, sorrows less bitter. The only pure joys unmixed with sadness which it is given to man to taste upon earth are, thanks to this angel, the joys of the Family.”
—Giuseppe Mazzini (18051872)
“Mothers who have little sense of their own minds and voices are unable to imagine such capacities in their children. Not being fully aware of the power of words for communicating meaning, they expect their children to know what is on their minds without the benefit of words. These parents do not tell their children what they mean by good much less why. Nor do they ask the children to explain themselves.”
—Mary Field Belenky (20th century)
