Joshua Freeman - Childhood and Education

Childhood and Education

Freeman was born in 1949 in New York City to working class parents. His grandfather was very active in the American labor movement, and politically active. His parents' and grandparents' influence left him deeply aware of what it meant to be working class. As a youth, he often explored working-class neighborhoods and felt a deep affinity for other similarly situated people.

Freeman obtained a bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1970.

He obtained a master's degree in 1976 and a Ph.D. in 1983, both from Rutgers University.

Famous quotes containing the words childhood and, childhood and/or education:

Sadism is not an infectious disease that strikes a person all of a sudden. It has a long prehistory in childhood and always originates in the desperate fantasies of a child who is searching for a way out of a hopeless situation.
    Alice Miller (20th century)

The route through childhood is shaped by many forces, and it differs for each of us. Our biological inheritance, the temperament with which we are born, the care we receive, our family relationships, the place where we grow up, the schools we attend, the culture in which we participate, and the historical period in which we live—all these affect the paths we take through childhood and condition the remainder of our lives.
    Robert H. Wozniak (20th century)

Bigotry is the disease of ignorance, of morbid minds; enthusiasm of the free and buoyant. Education and free discussion are the antidotes of both.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
