Joseph Whitaker School - History

History

The school takes its name from Joseph Whitaker a famous naturalist and sportsman who lived at nearby Rainworth Lodge. Founded in 1963, it was considerably expanded in 1971 upon becoming an 11 to 18 years mixed comprehensive school. In 2004, the school was awarded specialist sports college status and became a foundation school in 2006. and of whom a picture is hung above the entrance to the main hall. A fire in October 1995 destroyed the school hall and the sports hall and Gym of the adjoining leisure centre, which prompted a rebuild the following year.
