Jorgo Chatzimarkakis - Plagiarism and Revoking of PhD Degree

Plagiarism and Revoking of PhD Degree

In 2000 Chatzimarkakis received a doctor's degree at the University of Bonn. However the crowdsourcing project VroniPlag found several cases of plagiarism in the thesis. In May 2011 the University announced that it was investigating the claims at the request of Chatzimarkakis himself and on July 13 the University announced that the doctorate would be revoked after finding that more than half of the thesis was not correctly referenced. On 22 March 2012 the Verwaltungsgericht Köln dismissed Chatzimarkakis' action against the University of Bonn on the following grounds: "The Faculty has consistently held that the plaintiff was guilty of deception. In his doctoral thesis he adopted long passages verbatim from foreign works, without highlighting these clearly and in accordance with the rules of good scientific practise."

Famous quotes containing the words plagiarism and/or degree:

Ideas improve. The meaning of words participates in the improvement. Plagiarism is necessary. Progress implies it. It embraces an author’s phrase, makes use of his expressions, erases a false idea, and replaces it with the right idea.
    Guy Debord (b. 1931)

Essential truth, the truth of the intellectualists, the truth with no one thinking it, is like the coat that fits tho no one has ever tried it on, like the music that no ear has listened to. It is less real, not more real, than the verified article; and to attribute a superior degree of glory to it seems little more than a piece of perverse abstraction-worship.
    William James (1842–1910)
