Born on 19 November 1963 in Paddington, Greater London, he was brought up in Slough, England and attended Burnham Grammar School from 1976 to 1982. During this time, he represented Slough and Buckinghamshire Schools at soccer, the South of England Schoolboys and Berkshire
Buckinghamshire Minor Counties at cricket and England Schoolboys at field hockey.
Potter graduated from Southampton University in 1986 with a BA Hons 2.II degree in Geography. He then attended Aston Business School (1986 – 87) where he obtained his MBA.
