Johnston Gate

Completed in 1889, and built in the Georgian Revival style, Johnston Gate is one of many entrances of Harvard University campus in Cambridge. Johnston Gate connects Harvard Yard to Massachusetts Avenue and Harvard Square.

Johnston Gate is named after Samuel Johnston, an alumnus of Harvard (class of 1855), who donated $10,000 for its construction. Designed by the New York architectural firm of McKim, Mead, and White, it is one of most photographed locations in Harvard University campus.

Famous quotes containing the word gate:

    What heaven-entreated heart is this
    Stands trembling at the gate of bliss;
    Holds fast the door, yet dares not venture
    Fairly to open it and enter?
    Whose definition is a doubt
    ‘Twixt life and death, ‘twixt in and out?
    Richard Crashaw (1613?–1649)
