John Henry Kirby

John Henry Kirby (1860-1940) was a businessman whose ventures made him arguably the largest lumber manufacturer in Texas and the Southern United States. In addition to serving two terms in the Texas Legislature, he would also establish the Kirby Petroleum Company. With his successful reputation, he would be known by his business peers as "The Prince of the Pines" and "The Father of Industrial Texas". Kirbyville, Texas in Jasper County is named after him, as is Kirby Drive in Houston.

Famous quotes containing the words john, henry and/or kirby:

Spig Wead: I’ve been thinking what a heel I’ve been about you and about my own kids. I don’t know, when I do something, I go all the way. Living. Gambling. Flying. I tap myself out. I guess that’s the way I want it to be. Maybe even the way I am.
Minne Wead: Star-spangled Spig. Damn the martinis, full speed ahead and don’t give up the ship.
Frank Fenton, William Wister Haines, co-scenarist, and John Ford. Spig Wead (John Wayne)

You know, we always called each other “goodfellas,” like you’d say to somebody “you’re gonna like this guy, he’s all right, he’s a goodfella, he’s one of us.” You understand, we were goodfellas, wiseguys.
Nicholas Pileggi, U.S. screenwriter, and Martin Scorsese. Henry Hill (Ray Liotta)

Well, on the official record you’re my son. But on this post you’re just another trooper. You heard me tell the recruits what I need from them. Twice that I will expect from you.... You’ve chosen my way of life. I hope you have the guts enough to endure it. But put outa your mind any romantic ideas that it’s a way to glory. It’s a life of suffering and of hardship and uncompromising devotion to your oath and your duty.
James Kevin McGuinness, and John Ford. Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke (John Wayne)
