Webster is currently professor emeritus in the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He teaches Biomedical Engineering 310: Introduction to Bioinstrumentation.

He first proposed the idea of electrical impedance tomography as a medical imaging technique in a publication in 1978.

In his spare time, Webster works with undergraduate biomedical engineering design teams at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, including an ongoing project with impedance cardiography.
