John Frykman - Personal History

Personal History

Frykman's parents, both immigrants from Sweden, lived in the small town of Rehoboth, Massachusetts, where they built a house down the road from his grandparents' farm, of which Frykman carries many vivid memories. Frykman originally intended to be a carpenter, as he worked beside his father who did fine mill work and house building, but after achieving success on the football field in high school, changed his plans and majored in Physical Education at the University of Massachusetts. This chapter of his education was cut short by active service in Korea. It was during his time in Korea that Frykman kindled the determination to become a minister, which set him on the path to a lifetime of work for people unheard, unanswered and in need.

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or history:

The historian must have ... some conception of how men who are not historians behave. Otherwise he will move in a world of the dead. He can only gain that conception through personal experience, and he can only use his personal experiences when he is a genius.
    —E.M. (Edward Morgan)

It would be naive to think that peace and justice can be achieved easily. No set of rules or study of history will automatically resolve the problems.... However, with faith and perseverance,... complex problems in the past have been resolved in our search for justice and peace. They can be resolved in the future, provided, of course, that we can think of five new ways to measure the height of a tall building by using a barometer.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
