He played for the Toronto Blizzard during this time. Whilst pursuing his undergraduate degree in Economics at the University of Toronto, He played for the Toronto Varsity Blues where he was instrumental in securing a CIAU championship. John FitzGerald also played reserve football in England for in 1987 for both Brentford F.C. and Crystal Palace.
