John Deans Hope - Politics

Politics

Hope first stood for Parliament at West Perthshire at the 1895 general election but could not remove the sitting Liberal Unionist MP Sir Donald Currie. However he was successful in being returned as Liberal MP for West Fife in succession to Augustine Birrell in the Khaki election of 1900 and he held the seat until the general election of December 1910 when he lost to the Labour candidate William Adamson the Secretary of the Fife Miners’ Association.

Famous quotes containing the word politics:

Politics are for foreigners with their endless wrongs and paltry rights. Politics are a lousy way to get things done. Politics are, like God’s infinite mercy, a last resort.
    —P.J. (Patrick Jake)

I have come to the conclusion that the closer people are to what may be called the front lines of government ... the easier it is to see the immediate underbrush, the individual tree trunks of the moment, and to forget the nobility the usefulness and the wide extent of the forest itself.... They forget that politics after all is only an instrument through which to achieve Government.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)

The politics of the exile are fever,
    revenge, daydream,
    theater of the aging convalescent.
You wait in the wings and rehearse.
    You wait and wait.
    Marge Piercy (b. 1936)
