Loss of Sheriff's Office

The Mayor of Selma Joseph Smitherman and Wilson Baker wanted to blunt the force of the campaign by exercising restraint but the voter registration offices were Clark's responsibility. Famous quotes containing the words loss of, loss, sheriff and/or office:

... the loss of belief in future states is politically, though certainly not spiritually, the most significant distinction between our present period and the centuries before. And this loss is definite. For no matter how religious our world may turn again, or how much authentic faith still exists in it, or how deeply our moral values may be rooted in our religious systems, the fear of hell is no longer among the motives which would prevent or stimulate the actions of a majority.
    Hannah Arendt (1906–1975)

There is no greater wealth than Virtue,
and no greater loss than to forget it.
    Tiruvalluvar (c. 5th century A.D.)

The man’s an M.D., like you. He’s entitled to his opinion. Or do you want me to charge him with confusing a country doctor?
—Robert M. Fresco. Jack Arnold. Sheriff Jack Andrews (Nestor Paiva)

No people is wholly civilized where a distinction is drawn between stealing an office and stealing a purse.
    Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919)
