Jervis Bay Territory - History

History

The bay was sighted by Captain Cook in 1770. In 1791 the bay was entered by the transport ship Atlantic and named by Lt Richard Bowen, the naval agent aboard, in honour of British Admiral John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent, under whom he had served. John Jervis's family pronounced the surname 'jerviss'. (The origin of the surname was the Norman personal name 'Gervase', brought to England at the Conquest.)

The first European to visit the area was John Oxley, an English explorer and surveyor, in 1819.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

In all history no class has been enfranchised without some selfish motive underlying. If to-day we could prove to Republicans or Democrats that every woman would vote for their party, we should be enfranchised.
    Carrie Chapman Catt (1859–1947)

Don’t you realize that this is a new empire? Why, folks, there’s never been anything like this since creation. Creation, huh, that took six days, this was done in one. History made in an hour. Why it’s a miracle out of the Old Testament!
    Howard Estabrook (1884–1978)

History, as an entirety, could only exist in the eyes of an observer outside it and outside the world. History only exists, in the final analysis, for God.
    Albert Camus (1913–1960)
