Jersey Round Tower - The Round Towers

The Round Towers

The order below is counter-clockwise from the north-west corner of the island.

  • Grève de Lecq - Built September 1780
  • St Ouen No. 3 or D (High Tower) - Destroyed by the German forces during the Occupation of the Channel Islands
  • La Rocco - Built 1796-98, on an island off the west coast. On 14 May 1801 the States officially named it Gordon's Tower, in honour of the then Lieutenant-Governor, Lieutenant-General Andrew Gordon, but that name has since lapsed. It was the last of the round towers to be built. German artillery practice damaged the tower, which has since been restored.

  • St Ouen A - Damaged by the sea, it was finally destroyed by artillery fire
  • St Brelade No. 2 - Privately owned
  • St Brelade No. 1 (aka Ouaisné Tower ) - Privately owned
  • Third Tower (aka Beaumont Tower)
  • Second Tower - Destroyed by the German forces during the Occupation of the Channel Islands
  • First Tower
  • Le Hocq - Built to the east of St Helier, but only completed in 1781 after the French attack.
  • Plate Rocque - Built 1781, close to where the French landed earlier that year. It is now privately owned.
  • Seymour - Built 1781 two miles offshore on one an inter-tidal reef on the south-eastern corner of Jersey. Visitors may rent the tower, which is rather spartan, for overnight stays. From the tower, at low tide, one may walk out a further two miles to the Karamé Beacon.
  • Grouville No. 1 (aka La Rocque) - Privately owned and has a house built around it.
  • Grouville No. 2 (aka Keppel Tower) - Privately owned and has a house built around it.

Famous quotes containing the word towers:

From whatever you wish to know and measure you must take your leave, at least for a time. Only when you have left the town can you see how high its towers rise above the houses.
