When he finally retired as a player at the end of the 1967 season, he became the linebackers coach under Tom Landry for 21 years. He coached in five Super Bowls, winning two of them.

Tubbs died on June 13, 2012 at the age of 77. His family didn't issue a statement at the time, and some press reports are wrong.
