Jeremy Thorpe - Education

Education

Thorpe was educated at two independent schools: at Hazelwood School in Limpsfield in Surrey and Eton College in Eton in Berkshire, followed by Trinity College at the University of Oxford in Oxford, where he studied Law. He was very politically and socially active at Oxford, becoming President of the Liberal Club and the Law Society and finally becoming President of the Oxford Union in 1951.

His period of national service lasted just two weeks.

He was called to the bar in 1954, whilst working as a TV interviewer.

Famous quotes containing the word education:

It is not every man who can be a Christian, even in a very moderate sense, whatever education you give him. It is a matter of constitution and temperament, after all. He may have to be born again many times. I have known many a man who pretended to be a Christian, in whom it was ridiculous, for he had no genius for it. It is not every man who can be a free man, even.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

A two-year-old can be taught to curb his aggressions completely if the parents employ strong enough methods, but the achievement of such control at an early age may be bought at a price which few parents today would be willing to pay. The slow education for control demands much more parental time and patience at the beginning, but the child who learns control in this way will be the child who acquires healthy self-discipline later.
    Selma H. Fraiberg (20th century)
