1993 Fraternity Party Incident
In 1993, Jefferson Smith was involved in an incident at a fraternity party. A young woman mistakenly believed that Smith had tipped over the sofa she was sleeping on. When she awakened she angrily attempted to strike Smith and in the ensuing confusion Smith struck her face with his hand, as a result of which she received stitches. Smith paid the woman's hospital bill and agreed to a diversion agreement.
Smith threw a punch at another player while participating in a pick-up game of basketball at the now-closed Harriet Tubman Leadership Academy for Young Women. Smith said that a player threw him to the ground and denies punching the player in the groin. Instead, he said he hit his thigh.

Famous quotes containing the words fraternity, party and/or incident:
“Out of the thousand writers huffing and puffing through movieland there are scarcely fifty men and women of wit or talent. The rest of the fraternity is deadwood. Yet, in a curious way, there is not much difference between the product of a good writer and a bad one. They both have to toe the same mark.”
—Ben Hecht (18931964)
“No political party can ever make prohibition effective. A political party implies an adverse, an opposing, political party. To enforce criminal statutes implies substantial unanimity in the community. This is the result of the jury system. Hence the futility of party prohibition.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
“In the extent and proper structure of the Union, therefore, we behold a republican remedy for the diseases most incident to republican government.”
—James Madison (17511836)
