Shipman was previously in a relationship with WWE wrestler April Mendez, better known by her ring names Miss April and AJ Lee, whom he also trained. Shipman, under his Jay Lethal ring name, had a brief appearance in the critically acclaimed 2008 film The Wrestler. In November 2010 he was a contestant on an all TNA week of Family Feud, teaming with Matt Morgan, Mick Foley, Mr. Anderson and Rob Van Dam against Angelina Love, Christy Hemme, Lacey Von Erich, Tara and Velvet Sky.
