The Damdami Taksal Jatha

After the creation of the Khalsa, Guru Gobind Singh is said to have created the Damdami Taksal in 1706. Its first Jathedar (leader) was Baba Deep Singh who died at the age of 83 by having his head severed in a battle against Mughal forces. Dressed in the traditional Sikh Nihang wear of navy blue and orange covered in shasters(weapons) and traditional Sikh Amour he was known as a true image of a Sikh. His Khanda(traditional Sikh double edge sword) is 15 kg(about 32 lbs) in weight which is still kept in the Golden Temple today along with thousands of other historical Sikh weapons belonging to gurus and martyrs.

Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was the most well-known Jathedar (leader) of Damdami Taksal of the 20th century. He had a huge following, and supported implementation of the Anandpur Sahib Resolution. Bhindranwale was noted for his opposition to the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He is most notable for his involvement in the Operation Blue Star, in which he and his freedonm fighters occupied the Akal Takht complex, including the Golden Temple, in Amritsar. He was killed by the Indian Army led by Kuldip Singh Brar. Since his death, Bhindranwale has remained a controversial figure in Indian history, being described both as a great martyr of the Sikh faith as well as a misguided militant.
