Japanese Destroyer Yayoi (1925) - History

History

Construction of the Mutsuki-class destroyers was authorized as part of the Imperial Japanese Navy's build up following the abandonment of the Washington Naval Treaty from fiscal 1923. The class was a follow-on to the earlier Minekaze-class and Kamikaze class destroyers, with which they shared many common design characteristics. Yayoi, built at the Uraga Dock Company was laid down on January 11, 1924, launched on July 11, 1925 and commissioned on August 28, 1926. Originally commissioned simply as “Destroyer No. 23”, it was assigned the name Yayoi on August 1, 1928.

In the late 1930s, Yayoi participated in combat actions in the Second Sino-Japanese War, including the Invasion of French Indochina in 1940.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

When the coherence of the parts of a stone, or even that composition of parts which renders it extended; when these familiar objects, I say, are so inexplicable, and contain circumstances so repugnant and contradictory; with what assurance can we decide concerning the origin of worlds, or trace their history from eternity to eternity?
    David Hume (1711–1776)

“And now this is the way in which the history of your former life has reached my ears!” As he said this he held out in his hand the fatal letter.
    Anthony Trollope (1815–1882)

The history of a soldier’s wound beguiles the pain of it.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)
