Japan Foreign Marriage
In recent years rural Japanese men have begun taking foreign brides as a way of countering the reduced number of women who are of marriageable, childbearing age that are willing to marry rural Japanese men. The phenomenon has created a new industry of foreign marriage brokering that uses both local governments and private organizations to facilitate the immigration of foreign brides. This is largely a result of an aging population in Japan where approximately 20% of the population is over the age of 65, which is exceptionally high, a fertility rate of only 1.3, and increased opportunities for women and increased costs in child care.

Famous quotes containing the words japan, foreign and/or marriage:
“I do not know that the United States can save civilization but at least by our example we can make people think and give them the opportunity of saving themselves. The trouble is that the people of Germany, Italy and Japan are not given the privilege of thinking.”
—Franklin D. Roosevelt (18821945)
“Europe has a set of primary interests, which to us have none, or a very remote relation. Hence she must be engaged in frequent controversies, the causes of which are essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence, therefore, it must be unwise in us to implicate ourselves, by artificial ties, in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics or the ordinary combinations and collisions of her friendships or enmities.”
—George Washington (17321799)
“A marriage based on full confidence, based on complete and unqualified frankness on both sides; they are not keeping anything back; theres no deception underneath it all. If I might so put it, its an agreement for the mutual forgiveness of sin.”
—Henrik Ibsen (18281906)
