The Janissaries (from Ottoman Turkish يڭيچرى yeniçeri meaning "new soldier", Greek: Γενίτσαροι, Albanian: Jeniçer, Bosnian: Janičari, Hungarian: Janicsár, Croatian: Janjičari, Slovene: Janičarji, Romanian: Ieniceri, Serbian: Јањичари, Bulgarian: Еничари) were infantry units that formed the Ottoman sultan's household troops and bodyguards. The force was created by the Sultan Murad I and was abolished by Sultan Mahmud II in 1826 in the Auspicious Incident.
