Early Life
Allan was born the daughter of an Italian expeditionary and a Rhodesian socialite. She was adopted by a wealthy British-South African couple, John and Janet Fry at age one month old. The family briefly lived in England but her Scottish father was advised by doctors to move to a warmer climate. Subsequenly Allan was brought up in the Johannesburg suburb of Bryanston and attended Roedean School. John Fry died when Allan was 10 years old. She is a trained classical pianist and recorded a televised piano concerto as a child, and made her debut with Johannesburg symphony orchestra at the age of 10. Later she graduated in fine art and attained an honours degree in English literature at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:
“We have been told over and over about the importance of bonding to our children. Rarely do we hear about the skill of letting go, or, as one parent said, that we raise our children to leave us. Early childhood, as our kids gain skills and eagerly want some distance from us, is a time to build a kind of adult-child balance which permits both of us room.”
—Joan Sheingold Ditzion (20th century)
“The East is the hearthside of America. Like any home, therefore, it has the defects of its virtues. Because it is a long-lived-in house, it bursts its seams, is inconvenient, needs constant refurbishing. And some of the family resources have been spent. To attain the privacy that grown-up people find so desirable, Easterners live a harder life than people elsewhere. Today it is we and not the frontiersman who must be rugged to survive.”
—Phyllis McGinley (19051978)
