Family
McGrigor is the eldest son of the late Sir Charles McGrigor, 5th Bt, by his wife Mary Bettine (the historian Mary McGrigor), daughter of Sir Charles Edmonstone, 6th Baronet. He is descended patrilineally from Dr James McGrigor, Wellington's Surgeon General serving the British army in Spain during the Peninsular campaign, who received a baronetcy in 1831. Another distinguished relative was the late Admiral of the Fleet Sir Rhoderick McGrigor, grandson of the second Baronet and thus his first cousin twice removed.
Jamie became the 6th Baronet upon the death of his father, Sir Charles, on 1 October 2007.
He has been twice married, and has a son Alexander James Edward Lyon (born 1998) by his second marriage, who is his heir apparent.

Famous quotes containing the word family:
“When a family is free of abuse and oppression, it can be the place where we share our deepest secrets and stand the most exposed, a place where we learn to feel distinct without being better, and sacrifice for others without losing ourselves.”
—Letty Cottin Pogrebin (20th century)
“The value of a family is that it cushions and protects while the individual is learning ways of coping. And a supportive social system provides the same kind of cushioning for the family as a whole.”

“The agents steep and steady stare
Corroded to a grin.
Why, you black old, tough old hell of a man,
Move your family in!”
—Gwendolyn Brooks (b. 1917)
