James The Red Engine - James in Thomas and The Magic Railroad

James in Thomas and The Magic Railroad

Susan Roman voiced James in the film, Thomas and the Magic Railroad. Originally, he was played by current UK TV Series narrator Michael Angelis, who was also to voice Percy and perhaps Gordon. Unfortunately, test audiences said he sounded "too old", so Susan Roman replaced him. But she made James sound too feminine, something fans have strongly disliked.

In the film, James was briefly threatened by the evil Diesel 10 and almost pushed back into a smelting pit before being teleported out by Mr Conductor Junior (Michael E. Rodgers). At the beginning the fly annoying James was a reference to the original Awdry story, Buzz, Buzz.

Famous quotes containing the words james and/or magic:

The sway of alcohol over mankind is unquestionably due to its power to stimulate the mystical faculties of human nature, usually crushed to earth by the cold facts and dry criticisms of the sober hour. Sobriety diminishes, discriminates, and says no; drunkenness expands, unites, and says yes.
    —William James (1842–1910)

A full bosom is actually a millstone around a woman’s neck: it endears her to the men who want to make their mammet of her, but she is never allowed to think that their popping eyes actually see her. Her breasts ... are not parts of a person but lures slung around her neck, to be kneaded and twisted like magic putty, or mumbled and mouthed like lolly ices.
    Germaine Greer (b. 1939)
