James Pryde - Early Years

Early Years

James Ferrier Pryde was born in Edinburgh on March 30, 1866, the son of David Pryde, Headmaster of Edinburgh Ladies College 1870-1891, and Barbara Lauder, whose father William was a brother of the famous Scottish artists Robert Scott Lauder and James Eckford Lauder. He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy 1886–7. His early works (1886–90) included portraits in oil and charcoal, watercolours and pastels. He then studied for three months under William-Adolphe Bouguereau at the Académie Julian, Paris, and soon after his return to Britain settled in London around 1890.

Famous quotes containing the words early years, early and/or years:

If there is a price to pay for the privilege of spending the early years of child rearing in the driver’s seat, it is our reluctance, our inability, to tolerate being demoted to the backseat. Spurred by our success in programming our children during the preschool years, we may find it difficult to forgo in later states the level of control that once afforded us so much satisfaction.
    Melinda M. Marshall (20th century)

Our bad neighbor makes us early stirrers,
Which is both healthful and good husbandry.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

If I get the forty additional years statisticians say are likely coming to me, I could fit in at least one, maybe two new lifetimes. Sad that only one of those lifetimes can include being the mother of young children.
    Anna Quindlen (20th century)
