James Leonard Plimpton

James Leonard Plimpton (1828, Medfield, Massachusetts - 1911) was an American inventor who is known for changing the skating world with his patented roller skates in 1863. Pimpton's roller skates were safer and easier to use than the existing versions, his "rocker skate" or Quad skates allowed people to steer just by leaning to the left or the right. He also opened some of the earliest roller skating rinks in New York City and Newport, Rhode Island. :3

James Plimpton also invented the Plimpton cabinet bed. He married Harriet Amelia Adams on December 6, 1852.

Famous quotes containing the words james and/or leonard:

Philosophy is at once the most sublime and the most trivial of human pursuits. It works in the minutest crannies and it opens out the widest vistas. It ‘bakes no bread’, as has been said, but it can inspire our souls with courage.
    —William James (1842–1910)

The purpose of population is not ultimately peopling earth. It is to fill heaven.
    —Graham D. Leonard (b. 1921)
