John Tan Suspension Controversy
On October 21, 2008, lecturer John Tan, the assistant secretary-general of the Singapore Democratic Party, was suspended by JCU Singapore. The university cited the pending contempt of court case against Tan for wearing a T-shirt of a kangaroo in judge's clothing at the defamation trial of SDP secretary-general Chee Soon Juan. In response, JCU has been accused of compromising academic freedom and freedom of speech.

Famous quotes containing the words suspension and/or controversy:
“There are two kinds of liberalism. A liberalism which is always, subterraneously authoritative and paternalistic, on the side of ones good conscience. And then there is a liberalism which is more ethical than political; one would have to find another name for this. Something like a profound suspension of judgment.”
—Roland Barthes (19151980)
“Ours was a highly activist administration, with a lot of controversy involved ... but Im not sure that it would be inconsistent with my own political nature to do it differently if I had it to do all over again.”
—Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
