Jacob Henderson - Death of Mary and Holy Trinity Church

Death of Mary and Holy Trinity Church

On 19 January 1735, Henderson's wife Mary died. She was buried in Henderson's Chapel. In 1737, Henderson gave the chapel and 4 acres (16,000 m2) of land for the use of Queen Anne's Parish called "the Glebe whereon there is a Chapple now standing." Almost 100 years later, in 1836 Henderson's Chapel became an independent congregation, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.

Famous quotes containing the words death, mary, holy, trinity and/or church:

The techniques of opening conversation are universal. I knew long ago and rediscovered that the best way to attract attention, help, and conversation is to be lost. A man who seeing his mother starving to death on a path kicks her in the stomach to clear the way, will cheerfully devote several hours of his time giving wrong directions to a total stranger who claims to be lost.
    John Steinbeck (1902–1968)

    If Mary came would Mary
    Forgive, as Mothers may,
    And sad and second Saviour
    Furnish us today?
    Gwendolyn Brooks (b. 1917)

When they bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, do not worry about how you are to defend yourselves or what you are to say; for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what you ought to say.
    Bible: New Testament, Luke 12:11,12.

Nature is so perfect that the Trinity couldn’t have fashioned her any more perfect. She is an organ on which our Lord plays and the devil works the bellows.
    Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749–1832)

Isn’t this your life? That ancient kiss
still burning out your eyes? Isn’t this defeat
so accurate, the church bell simply seems
a pure announcement: ring and no one comes?
    Richard Hugo (1923–1982)
