Origins

There are two etymologies of the name Ivo:

  • One derives from continental Celtic "IVO" meaning "YEW", one of the ancient Celts holy trees. This is used in German, Dutch and Ancient Germanic.
  • One derives from the Slavic name Ivan. This is used in Bulgarian, Macedonian, Croatian and can be found in the Balkan Peninsula, Romania, Italy and other neighboring regions.
  • Among the Bulgarians, Ivo is also a diminutive form of the more common Bulgarian given name of Ivaylo.
