The intrauterine device (IUD) with progestogen, Mirena, is a hormonal intrauterine device classified as a long-acting reversible contraceptive method. It is one of the most effective forms of birth control. In the United Kingdom, the IUD with progestogen is referred to as an intrauterine system (IUS) or intrauterine contraceptive (IUC). This article will refer to the device as the hormonal IUD. The only currently available hormonal IUD is the Mirena.
